Should you start a Facebook Group?

There are a number of reasons why you might want to start a Facebook group. Usually, though, you have something to promote. You might want to promote a business, a cause, a school, or almost anything.

I recently started a Facebook group to promote my Best Online High Schools website. That website is for people who are interested in earning a high school diploma online and most of those folks tend to be comfortable using new technologies like Facebook.

If you are also looking to promote a book, a website, or something else, starting a Facebook group provides you with the opportunity to have your information on a website that consistently has a very high Google Pageranking.

The process of starting a Facebook group is really quite simple. Unlike in Facebook past, anyone can now join. To start a group, you would:

1. Go to Facebook.
2. Set up an account (if you don't already have one).
3. Click on the Group button (the "two heads") at the lower left side of your Facebook page.
4. Click on Create a New Facebook Group.
5. Name your group and give it a description.
6. Select the group type.
7. Click on Create Group.
8. You are done!

Now, this is the minimum amount of information to get started. On that page, where you name your group and give it a description, there are also places to provide contact information including email addresses and websites.

Absolutely you will want to provide this information. Don't forget that the point of starting this group was promotion. If folks can't contact you anywhere except for your Facebook page, you are missing contact opportunities.

And, yes, those contact opportunities are the entire point behind having a Facebook Group!
