What is an online charter school?

Online charter schools are very similar to other online schools. As a charter school, they are public and free. Typically, an online charter school is a mixture of local and national. The local piece are the local people who had the vision to start the school. However, usually they contract out the curriculum to e2020, K12, or a number of other curriculum companies that work on a national level.

Online charter schools have greater flexibility in what they can offer and how they can offer it. Someonline charter schools use a blended learning model where students use the digital curriculum, but spend a noticeable amount of time at a school. Other online charter schools are conducted entirely online.

How Do You Apply?

This is simple. Online charter schools are public schools. You walk in and you tell them that you would like to attend their school. Typically, you will be accepted. Their are only three reasons for why they might not accept you. They are:

  • You don't live in their geographical service area. Online charter schools can usually accept students who live in their county, but also who live in adjacent counties. If you live too far away, it is unlikely that you can gain admission.
  • You are too old. For the most part, online charter schools accept students up to the traditional end-of-school age, about eighteen, but a few do accept students up to the age of twenty-one.
  • The school has reached its capacity. They do not have to take students when they are full. Often they will have a waiting list.
